The partnership began
in March 1921 when the City of Sheffield
and the Colbert County government pooled
their resources to purchase the New Belmont
Hospital. New Belmont, a two-story structure
located at 300 East 4th Street in Sheffield,
had originally been built in 1917 as a
boarding house for government employees
working in area nitrate plants. Dr. W.
H. Greer and Dr. W. H. Blake, Sr. had
converted the boarding house to a hospital
in 1919.
New Belmont Hospital’s
name was changed to Colbert County Hospital
following the March 1921 purchase. This
new name reflected the hospital’s
position as a community-based medical
center. According to a 1923 report in
the Sheffield Standard Newspaper, the
hospital was "reasonably well equipped,
neat and clean, with an excellent business
manager, a strong governing body, and
a women’s auxiliary." The hospital,
at that time, had a bed capacity of about
20 to 25.
By 1927, the overwhelming
demand for services at Colbert County
Hospital prompted local politicians and
physicians to consider expansion and relocation.
The Sheffield Company, a local firm, contributed
a piece of land for the site of a new
building. The current hospital facility
is on this piece of land. Raising money
for the new facility was truly a community
effort. The city officials of Sheffield
and Tuscumbia, along with officials of
Colbert County, issued bonds for construction,
while civic organizations, churches, physicians,
and other citizens furnished the new hospital.
Sheffield, AL-The Helen Keller Hospital Foundation has set its Fourth Annual Golf Tournament for Friday, October 14, 2005, at Cypress Lakes Golf & Country Club in Muscle Shoals. The tournament is a four-person scramble, with shotgun starts at 8:00 am and 1:00 pm.
According to Steve Nesbitt, Chairman of the Foundation, "We are excited that this tournament has continued to generate excitement and participation from members of the community. All proceeds from this year's tournament will be used towards the purchase of a new ambulance for the Helen Keller Hospital Ambulance Department. Of course, this will be a benefit to each and every member of the community since the Hospital's ambulance service is a primary responder to 911 calls."
On August 4, 2005, Helen Keller Hospital was presented with the
HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Excellence in Patient Safety. Our hospital is one of the Nation's Best. In fact, we are in
the top 3% of Hospitals nationwide for Patient Safety.
It's important for our patients to know which hospitals meet
this standard,as they are 200% less likely to have an incident at
Distinguished Hospitals, such as Helen Keller Hospital. And, area
patients should know that we are the only hospital in North Alabama to
receive this designation.
The second annual HealthGradesTM Patient Safety in American
Hospitals study independently analyzes the performance of nearly every
hospital in the country according to 13 patient safety indicators.
According to their study, Helen Keller Hospital's patient safety record
is among the best in the nation. The study was conducted of 37 million
patient records from 4,200 hospitals.
We are proud of this designation because of what this means for
the patients we serve. Our patients know that they can trust Helen
Keller Hospital for the best and safest in healthcare.
