Helen Keller Hospital Employees Attend Homeland Security Training



Sheffield, Ala. - Two of Helen Keller Hospital's employees recently completed Framework for Healthcare Emergency Management training offered by the Center of Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in Anniston, Ala. Ronda Hood, Cardiopulmonary Service Director and Safety Officer for Helen Keller Hospital, and Marty Evans, Maintenance Director, attended the Homeland Security training offered by the CDP, which is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The CDP develops and delivers advanced training for emergency response providers, emergency managers, and other government officials from state, local, and tribal governments. Training at the CDP campus is federally funded at no cost to state, local, and tribal emergency response professionals or their agencies. Resident training at the CDP includes healthcare and public health courses at the Noble Training Facility, the nation's only hospital dedicated to training healthcare professionals in disaster preparedness and response.

"Hopefully we will never have another major disaster in our area," said Hood, "but the training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness allows us to incorporate "lessons learned" from other professionals and healthcare facilities into our hospital's planning and response should another event occur. " Evans added, "What I gained (and was impressed by) was the knowledge and experience of healthcare professionals across the nation who have experienced disasters and were able to share the information of how they dealt with and worked through those events."
