Keller Sports Medicine Hosts High School Athletic Physicals

Sheffield, Ala. - On May 20, 2015
Keller Sports Medicine and Rehab Services provided free pre-participation physicals to athletes from junior high and high schools across Colbert County. These physicals are required by the Alabama High School Athletic Association on an annual basis prior to the athlete participating in any school-sponsored sport.

Over 575 athletes were seen from schools including Covenant Christian, Sheffield, Deshler, Colbert Heights, Cherokee, and Colbert County. This was possible due to help from local physicians who volunteer their time and expertise. Participating physicians included: Dr. Mark McIlwain, Dr. Josh Vacik, Dr. Stephen Howell, Dr. Aaron Howell, Dr. David McKinley, Dr. Dearl BirdSong, Dr. Teresa Olsen, Dr. Robert Flowers, Dr. Jeffery Hovater, and Dr. Aaron Joiner. Also assisting were Bobby Bowen, Physician's Assistant from Bone and Joint Clinic, and four medical students.

Over 30 staff members performed screenings, which included height and weight, vision, blood pressure, pulse, and orthopedic screenings. Cardiopulmonary screening and final clearance for participation were provided by the physicians. If issues were discovered, the athlete was instructed to follow up with his or her regular physician. The Keller Sports Medicine Certified Athletic Trainers will help coordinate any physician follow up that is needed, as well as thoroughly review each athlete's physical form for any medical issues that might need to be monitored through the year.
