Helen Keller Hospital wants kids to be Healthy!

Below are some healthy tips for children:

As fall approaches, school has started, and everyone is settling back into routines, it is important to remember healthy lifestyle habits.

Here are a few ways to help you stay healthy!
1. Eat at least one meal a day as a family - with school, work, after school activities, and more, it is hard to be able to sit down and eat as a family. Talk to the people in your house about making it a priority to either sit down for a quick breakfast or set a time to sit down for dinner. This will ensure that you are all making healthy choices during that time of the day!

2. Get outside and get involved - whether it is an after school sport or just taking a walk in the evening, make sure you are getting out and getting exercise. This can be another way to involve the whole family!

3. Turn off the technology - Make an active choice to not go straight to a screen when you have downtime. This time is great for a family activity or learning a new hobby!

4. Ask to participate in meal planning - Let your parents know that you want to help with meal planning and prep. Go grocery shopping and choose healthy options!

5. Extracurricular activities - This gives you a chance to make new friends, explore new skills & talents, and increase your self-confidence.

Here's to a HAPPY AND HEALTHY FALL

Breakfast...

the Best Part of Your Back to School Routine!

As you start back to school, there are a lot of things to remember. Here is one that you shouldn't forget - BREAKFAST!

Breakfast is a great start to your day. It gives the body the refueling it needs. Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall and are more likely to participate in physical activities.

Skipping breakfast can make you feel tired, restless or irritable. Breakfast can help you keep your weight in check. It kick-starts your metabolism, the process by which the body converts food to energy.

What you eat is important, too. Pick foods rich in whole grains, fiber, and protein. Limit sugary foods. Here are some suggestions for healthy breakfast ideas:
whole-grain cereal with fruit and yogurt
whole-grain waffles with peanut butter or fruit
peanut butter on a whole-grain bagel
breakfast smoothies
veggie omelets
bran muffin and yogurt

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!!!

draw chalk games (like hopscotch) to get moving!
Go on a nature scavenger hunt. Make a list of things to spot
and find. Get a group together to hunt!
Have a neighborhood parade! Get costumes, bikes, wagons,
etc. and parade down the street. Make sure you have adult
     supervision.
Help your parents in the garden.
Start a lemonade stand.
Have a bike wash for other kids in the neighborhood.
Dont' forget the sunscreen!!!

Eating Health During the Holidays

Holiday healthy eating habits
The holiday season is full of yummy food. With all of these tasty treats around, it might seem impossible to eat healthy. You don't have to let healthy eating habits slide just because it is holiday time!

HERE ARE SOME TIPS to help you and your family stay on track with healthy eating habits during the holiday season!

HAVE A HEALTHY SNACK before you go to a party or a big dinner. Snacking on fruit, raw veggies, or whole grain crackers will help you eat less at the event!

When you are at that holiday party, CHOOSE HEALTHIER FOODS, SUCH AS VEGGIES OR FRUITS.

It takes your brain some time to signal that you are full, so wait 10-15 minutes before going back for seconds. This will keep you from overeating!

Just say "NO!". It's not rude to say no to food. If you aren't hungry, don't be pressured to eat.

Everything is okay in moderation. Small portions of holiday goodies like fudge, cookies, etc. is okay. DON'T OVERDO IT!

When you are cooking with your parents, CHOOSE LOW-FAT AND LOW-CALORIE RECIPES.
