Helen Keller Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation program is for individuals who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, or who have symptoms of coronary artery disease.

Cardiac Rehab begins immediately after heart disease has been diagnosed. In the beginning of the rehabilitation process, the Cardio Pulmonary staff will provide you with information to assist you with your lifestyle modification program.

The outpatient program generally lasts twelve weeks. Monitored exercise is introduced during this time and educational classes are held weekly on a number of subjects, including:

Risk Factors and Cardiovascular Disease

Eating for a Healthy Heart

After the twelve week monitored program, a maintenance program is offered. This phase encourages the continuation of a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise.

Pulmonary Rehab begins after pulmonary disease has been diagnosed. The outpatient program lasts for 12 weeks. monitored exercise is introduced during this time and individual education is provided on the following subjects:

How the Lungs Work
Risk Factors
Diet and Nutrition
Smoking Cessation

After the 12 week program, a maintenance program is offered. This phase encourages the continuation of a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise.

A registered dietitian is available for educational sessions and one-on-one counseling needs. Cooking Light classes are offered to help develop healthy eating habits.

How to Begin

Ask your physician if you could benefit from Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, or call and speak with a rehab team member.

Following a physician's approval, all program participants are given preliminary evaluations to determine their current fitness and health levels. Exercise sessions are then scheduled three times per week. Intensity and duration are gradually increased over the course of this phase.

For safe and carefree sessions, patients are monitored for cardiac arrhythmias, appropriate blood pressure, and other responses throughout exercise on the cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills, stationary bikes, stair steppers, and an indoor walking track.

We believe family participation and support play an incredibly important role in both recovery and continued good health. A support person may attend the exercise sessions and education classes at no charge during the cardiopulmonary rehab.

What to Wear

Wear or bring comfortable, loose fitting clothes and supportive shoes for walking.

Insurance Coverage

Most major medical insurers will pay all or a portion of the cardiopulmonary program fee. Help is provided to determine exactly what a particular insurance will pay.

The 10,000 square foot Keller Wellcare Center has a number of well-equipped cardiovascular stations with equipment such as treadmills, stair steppers, rowing machines, stationary bikes, and an indoor walking track.

This equipment will enable you to build stamina and increase cardiovascular endurance. Free weights and a variety of weight training stations are also available to help increase your muscular strength. Separate showers for men and women, lockers, and other amenities are provided for your convenience.

Many patients who complete Cardiopulmonary Rehab programs wish to continue the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. The Wellcare Center allows you to continue using their facilities for a nominal fee.
