Helen Keller Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary Gives Back

Sheffield, Ala. - The Helen Keller Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary is a group of hospital volunteers that work to donate back to the hospital and the community through many different ways. This year, they have raised around $20,000, which they have distributed throughout the community.

The Auxiliary hosts five fundraisers per year to raise money for the Louise Isbell Ashe Scholarship. These $1000 scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors who are pursuing careers in the medical field. This year, the Auxiliary awarded ten scholarships to local students.

Each year, the Keller Volunteers host a Relay for Life team. This year, the team raised $5,000 for the American Cancer Society, with team members hosting yard sales, silent auctions, bake sales, and Easter Bunny photos as fundraisers.

In 2012, Helen Keller Hospital opened palliative care suites to provide emotional and physical comfort for patients and their families through a life-threatening illness. The Volunteer Auxiliary created baskets for these suites and continues to keep those baskets going for the families in these areas. These baskets include snacks and treats for use during their stay in the palliative care suites.

Our Pediatric area is a very important area to our small patients. To make their hospital stay a little less scary, the Auxiliary donated $2500 to furnish a playroom on the pediatric floor. This area is for patients to visit when they are feeling well enough to read a book or play with some of the toys available. Keeping our youngest patients in mind, the Auxiliary also purchases items such as coloring books, crayons, stuffed animals, and children's books for bags to give to our pediatric patients and for children that are patients of the Emergency Room.

In June 2016, the Auxiliary donated $500 to Safeplace for their Liberty Luncheon fundraiser, held at the Marriott-Shoals Conference Center. Nine volunteers attended the luncheon, representing the Auxiliary and Helen Keller Hospital.

Working with the Helen Keller Hospital Foundation, the Auxiliary donated $750 to the annual Golf Tournament to furnish breakfast for the participants. Our volunteers also form a team each year, while other volunteers are on site to assist with activities.

The Auxiliary also hosts teas and parties within the hospital for employees and volunteers. The Valentine Tea is an annual event for all hospital employees. The volunteers provide snacks and goodies for the employees. Each Christmas, a Christmas Tea is held for all volunteers. Attendees are asked to bring supplies or toys to donate to the Healing Place.
